Voidualists

The void school usually expresses the impermanence of life by drawing fruits and characters in still life.

Remind the audience that power, pleasure, and good things will eventually come to dust.

Moral Information

The Void School is a special form of still life painting, which is conceived by artists from many levels, and it is not only exquisite works of art. On the contrary, everything in the painting has a symbolic meaning. Void paintings show the audience how foolish people's ambitions are, that no one can escape death. As mentioned above, the works of the Void School are moral sermons, warning people that everything in the world is neither meaningful nor as important as people think. Traditional still life paintings of the void school mainly symbolize wealth, knowledge, natural things or earthly things by means of specific things, and then can be juxtaposed with the theme of expressing the resurrection of Jesus and the hope of eternal life by means of physical objects.

It's hard to escape death.

Some other elements are also used by the vanity in the paintings, such as rotten fruits, symbolizing aging: Foam symbolizes sudden death: extinguished candles and clocks remind us of the short life. However, skull is the most frequently used symbol of the void in the expression of death. The hero of Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet, Prince Hamlet of Denmark, holds the head of his servant Ulik and laments the short life of all things in the world and the death of anyone. Death is inevitable and there is no point in talking about survival.

Symbolism of the Void School

As far as artistic style is concerned, the still life represented by the Void School is by no means the appearance of the emperor, but has profound implications. A glass of wine, perhaps intuitively speaking, is only a cup of grape juice that contains aromatic and attractive aromas, but wine can also symbolize the blood of Jesus Christ (especially a glass of wine placed beside a bread); it may also refer to human taste: even to indulgence and decadence. The things represented in the works of the Void School are mainly divided into three categories: firstly, the life equipment of ordinary people, such as books, tools, wallets, contracts, etc; secondly, the things reflecting the impermanence of life, such as skulls, hourglass and so on; thirdly, the things reflecting the theme of salvation or immortality, such as a bunch of wheat ears, laurel wreath or ivory. In addition, shells and purple clothes symbolize wealth: cluttered plates imply human stupidity, suggesting that humans care only about their appetite, but are unwilling to save their souls. Mirror is used to express wisdom, knowledge, one side: a mirror covered with dust, symbolizing that human beings are blinded by ignorance.

Example

Sundial -still life French painting school

Some timing devices, including sundials, are often used to symbolize the passage of time and often appear in time-themed paintings such as' last time'.

A young man with a skeleton in his hand

Some people think that the young man in the work of the Dutch painter Lance Hals is Shakespeare's Hamlet, and the skeleton is a warning. Although a young man holds a skeleton, it also reminds the audience of death.

Three monkeys.

Monkeys symbolize greed and indulgence. So in Franz Snyder's work, monkeys go straight to food, warning humans not to becontrolled by animal instinct.
